Katy by Model Shipways - MS2001 Model Expo: In response to your request for ship model pictures, I have attached photos of my Virginia Pilot Schooner KATY, circa 1800. My Virginia Pilot Schooner is an old Model Shipways solid hull kit, 1/4" to 1' 0" scale, purchased in the 1960's (with the original yellow box). The hull is fully planked, the deck is planked with nibbing, the original lead fittings were replaced with scratch built components, the sails are cotton, and the rigging is proportional linen line with blocks by Warner Woods West. In addition to the kit drawings and instructions, I used the following references: Planking the Built-Up Ship Model by Jim Roberts; How to Build First-Rate Ship Models from Kits by Ben Lankford; The Neophyte Shipmodeler's Jackstay by George Campbell; Modeling the Armed Virginia Sloop, a Practicum by Robert Hunt; The Art of Knotting and Splicing by Cyrus Lawrence Day; and, Steel's Elements of Masting, Sailmaking, and Rigging, 1794, by David Steel. My Katy, Virginia Pilot Schooner was my 1st build. I am currently building the Armed Virginia Sloop by Model Shipways using Robert Hunt's practicum (I just completed the hull planking using a single layer of 1/16" bass wood). I am pleased to see your plans to reissue the old Model Shipways solid hull kits. Regards, Pete ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
