No cannons. No cargo holds. No sailors being flogged for insubordination.

Just the long, clean lines of a classic Italian inboard runabout—the sort of polished mahogany motorboat one expects to find gliding past a villa on Lake Garda while everyone aboard appears to have inherited money or some Italian nobility title.

Mantua reproduces that unmistakable style in a compact 1:20 scale wooden model measuring 17.7 inches long.

The hull is built properly, over a laser-cut keel and frames, then double-planked. A flexible inner layer of balsa lets you shape the hull’s curves smoothly. The second layer is genuine mahogany, giving the finished boat the deep, rich wood surface that makes these Italian runabouts so difficult to ignore.

And because admiring it on a shelf may eventually feel insufficient, the Mincio is designed to accommodate radio-control equipment. An electric motor is included; the remaining electronics are left to the builder.

Build it for display. Equip it for the water.

Either way, it will look considerably more expensive than your workshop.

Building the Mincio

Double-Planked Mahogany Hull

The first layer of balsa creates a smooth, forgiving foundation. The outer mahogany planking supplies the color, grain, and polished appearance that define a classic Italian runabout.

Laser-Cut Keel and Frames

The principal structural components are laser-cut for cleaner alignment and less time spent trying to persuade two vaguely related pieces of plywood to cooperate.

Made for RC Installation

The hull is designed with radio-control operation in mind and provides internal space for the motor, steering components, battery, and electronics.

Electric Motor Included

Mantua supplies the model with an electric motor, giving builders a starting point for an operational setup. Additional RC and electrical components are required.

Compact, but Not Insignificant

At 17.7 inches long, the Mincio is large enough to show off its mahogany hull and cockpit details without requiring the relocation of household furniture.

Planning to Run It on the Water?

To complete a typical radio-controlled installation, you will also need:

Two-channel transmitter and receiver

Electronic speed controller compatible with your chosen motor

Connectors and wiring

Marine grease for the propeller shaft

Waterproof sealant or finishing resin

Building Notes

The Mincio's first balsa planking layer makes the hull more approachable than a single-layer mahogany build, but patience during shaping and finishing will determine the final appearance.

For the best result:

Dry-fit the keel and frames before gluing.

Keep every frame square during hull assembly.

Fair the first planking layer carefully before adding mahogany.

Test-fit the complete drivetrain and steering system before closing the deck.

Seal the hull thoroughly if the model will be operated on water.

Apply several thin coats of clear marine varnish, sanding lightly between coats, to bring out the mahogany grain.

The wood provides the elegance.

The varnish provides the unreasonable amount of staring afterward.
