Your First Serious Schooner

The Sharpie Schooner has two masts, three sails, a cabin, and the lines of a boat that had somewhere to be. It represents one of the terrapin schooners used for turtle fishing along the Florida and Gulf coasts.

These boats needed shallow draft to work coastal waters and enough room for a crew to stay out for days. The model captures that practical character: a low working hull, a small cabin, a bowsprit, and a schooner rig that gives the finished boat a striking profile without demanding a warship-sized display case.

This is a rewarding next build for someone with a little wooden boat experience.

You assemble the hull over frames, fit the side and bottom planking, build the deck and cabin details, shape the masts and spars, and bring the model to life with sails and rigging. There is real cutting, fitting, and finishing to do, with Midwest’s illustrated Success Series manual guiding the work.

What’s in the kit?

Wood for the hull and details: Laser-cut basswood parts, basswood stripwood, and walnut pieces for details such as the companionway door and moldings.

Masts, spars, and deck features: Wood dowels and stripwood to make the two masts, booms, gaffs, bowsprit, tiller, rails, and other fittings.

Sail material: Cotton sailcloth and full-size sail drawings. You cut and finish the sails as part of the build.

Rigging supplies: Black standing-rigging thread, running-rigging cordage, blocks, mast hoops, and the small hardware needed to rig the schooner.

Metal and deck fittings: Brass wire and rod, cleats, eyes, a cast Britannia metal anchor, and anchor chain.

Display materials: Wood for the display stand and base.

Build guides: Two full-size plan sheets and Midwest’s illustrated, step-by-step construction manual.

You can display the schooner with her sails set, as shown on the box, or leave the sails off to make the rigging and deck work more visible. The manual covers both display choices.
