A long, lean hull. Masts swept dramatically aft. A bowsprit that seems determined to get there before the rest of the ship.
The Pride of Baltimore II has one of the most distinctive silhouettes in sailing—and at 32 inches long, this Model Shipways kit gives you enough ship to appreciate every curve, fitting, and carefully tensioned line.
Some ships look impressive sitting still. This one looks impatient.
Baltimore Clippers earned their reputation during the War of 1812, when fast, maneuverable privateers made life thoroughly unpleasant for British merchant shipping. Their sharp hulls and towering rigs served a practical purpose: catch what you wanted, escape what you didn’t.
Launched in 1988, Pride of Baltimore II carries that tradition forward as Maryland’s sailing goodwill ambassador. She preserves the appearance and spirit of those remarkable schooners while incorporating the equipment needed by a working modern vessel.
That combination gives the model unusual character: classic privateer lines, cannon and swivel guns, and the fascinating details of a ship built to keep sailing.
Accuracy you can build on
Ben Lankford developed the model plans from naval architect Thomas Gillmer’s original ship drawings, supplemented by photographs, onboard measurements, and assistance from the people who knew the vessel best.
The result represents Pride II as she appeared in 1993–1994, giving you a documented foundation for a carefully detailed model.
Laser-cut basswood keel and bulkhead components establish the framework. From there, you shape and plank the hull, build the deck structures, fit out the ship, and assemble the distinctive schooner rig.
Six plan sheets and a 48-page illustrated instruction manual guide the work, from hull construction through standing and running rigging.
The details reward a closer look
Britannia metal and brass fittings bring the working ship to life, including her windlass, anchors, steering wheel, bell, pumps, cannon barrels, and swivel guns.
The rigging package includes 150 wooden blocks and deadeyes, plus four sizes of cotton line. Together with the sharply raked masts and long bowsprit, these details create the unmistakable profile that makes this model such a compelling display piece.
Wooden launching ways are included to support the finished ship. Display base sold separately.
A rewarding next build
For modelers with previous wooden shipbuilding experience, Pride of Baltimore II offers plenty to engage both hands and mind: hull planking, deck detail, spar construction, and a distinctive topsail schooner rig.
Each stage contributes something visible to the finished result.
And what a result: a graceful, commanding model with the unmistakable look of a ship built to move.
