The Little Locomotive That Changed Everything

Stephenson’s Rocket was not the first steam locomotive.

It was merely the one that showed everybody how the job ought to be done.

Built by Robert Stephenson & Co. for the Rainhill Trials of 1829, Rocket combined a multitubular boiler, blast-pipe exhaust, inclined cylinders, and direct connection to its driving wheels. The result was a locomotive that was faster, lighter, and more efficient than its competitors.

Rocket successfully completed the trials and reached approximately 30 mph—a perfectly ordinary school-zone speed today, but rather alarming when most people still traveled at the speed of a horse.

Its basic engineering arrangement helped establish the pattern followed by steam locomotives for generations.

More than 270 laser-cut engineered-wood pieces form the locomotive’s distinctive boiler, tall smokestack, large spoked driving wheels, inclined cylinders, connecting rods, frame, and other visible mechanical details.

The pieces arrive precision-cut, so there is no cutting, sanding, or filling required. Illustrated instructions guide you through the assembly, making this an approachable project for newer builders and a pleasantly uncomplicated change of pace for experienced modelers.

Glue is required to secure the completed assembly.

Leave the model in its natural wood finish or paint it in Rocket’s famous yellow, black, red, and metallic color scheme. A coordinated Nauticurso Rocket paint set is available separately.
