The Ship Modeler's Pounce Wheel has a fine, needle-point metal wheel that creates a regular line of small impressions as it rolls. On copper tape or thin copper sheet, those impressions reproduce the rows of fasteners seen on full-size copper hull plating—quickly, neatly, and with far better spacing than most of us can manage by eye.

Run it along a straightedge to emboss clean rows before cutting or applying the plates. Adjust the pressure to control the depth of the marks, then repeat for the remaining plates. The result is subtle surface detail that catches the light and makes a coppered hull look considerably more convincing.

Originally designed as a tracing and stitch-marking tool, it happens to be remarkably useful at the ship-modeling bench. We do enjoy finding respectable new employment for tools from other professions.

How to Use It on Copper Plates

1. Place the copper tape or thin copper sheet on a firm surface with a slight amount of give, such as a cutting mat or dense card.

2. Position a metal ruler or straightedge where the fastener line should run.

3. Roll the wheel steadily along the edge using light, even pressure.

4. Test the pressure on scrap material first; too much force may pierce or distort very thin copper.

5. Cut and apply the embossed plates to the hull as usual.

For the neatest pattern, emboss the copper while it is still flat rather than after it has been applied to the model.
